The Power of Inspiration

My wife Jodi signed us up for the Purdue University Northwest Sinai Forum 2018. It was a great way to spend five Sunday late afternoons broadening our perspective on life issues. The speakers were wonderful, James Comey (yes that James Comey), internationally know photographer PLATON who has photographed for Rolling Stones, The New York Times magazine, Vanity Fair, Esquire and GQ, Reshma Saujani, the founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, a national non-profit org working to close the gender gap in technology, Robert Costa, the national political reporter for The Washington Post, and Lou Holtz, one of the most successful college football coaches of all time!
Each speaker offered their own type of inspiration and we always left feeling more informed about each of the topics each speaker offered. Naturally, hearing and seeing PLATON was a real thrill since we are also fellow photographers and enjoyed seeing his special style how he captured famous people from all over the world.
Platon, born Platon Antoniou is a British photographer who has taken portrait of many presidents and well know world figures. Here is a quick example of his work:

That’s Jodi and me in the center photo on top. An original by Platon himself!! It was a quick selfie that he took for us after he signed his book for us after his talk.
Feeling inspired about a different way to capture portraiture, instead of the usual head and shoulder head shot, I set out to try this unique style. So I reached out to our own Valparaiso, Indiana mayor Jon Costas, who we have known for years and offered to spend some time with to capture some portrait memories of him as he will be completing his 16th year of mayor in 2019 and will not seek re-election. He agreed, and we captured a nice variety of imagery for him including some of the ‘different’ style that Platon shared with us at Purdue.
Here are a few from our evening with Mayor Costas…
So our next desire will be to reach out to other area mayors to see if they might be interested in portrait sessions. And even Chicago’s mayor Rahm Emanuel since he will also not be seeking re-election. It would be great to spend some time with the Chicago mayor capturing memories for him as well. -Rick Bella for Bella Photography
