The Art & Honor of Magazine Photo Covers

There is no greater honor—or challenge—than being commissioned to create images for magazine covers. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of photographing covers for various regional and national publications, each opportunity offering a unique blend of creativity and storytelling.

A cover image does more than capture a subject; it conveys the editor’s vision and tells a story in a single frame. Understanding who I’m photographing is key, and making them feel comfortable in front of the camera is just as important. A relaxed subject always leads to a more natural and compelling image. 

I’ve been fortunate to contribute imagery to Wedding Essentials, Wearables, Northwest Indiana Business Magazine, Industrial Supply, and American Cake Decorating Magazine, among others. Beyond cover photography, I’ve also been commissioned to capture supporting visuals that complement the lead articles, helping to enhance the magazine’s overall narrative.

One of the aspects I’ve always appreciated is the creative freedom I’m given. Unlike a rigid shot list—a detailed checklist specifying every required image, angle, and lighting setup—I’ve often been trusted to use my artistic judgment. While a shot list can be helpful, it doesn’t always allow for spontaneous inspiration or the ability to adapt to the setting. Being able to incorporate the surroundings or a company’s backdrop often results in more authentic and engaging imagery. 

For example, when photographing a company owner in the supply industry, I captured him sitting on a warehouse shelf surrounded by the products he ships. That image ended up on the cover. Another time, I photographed the President of a manufacturing company holding a selection of their unique products right on the manufacturing floor. This image effectively told the story of their business. My goal is always to create images that tell a story and enhance the magazine while enticing readers to pick up the magazine and dive into the content. 

I always provide editors with various images, ensuring they have options that best suit their vision. Seeing my work featured on magazine covers and inside pages never gets old-it’s a thrill every time. I’m grateful for the opportunities to bring these stories to life through my lens. Meeting business owners and others along the way is a great side benefit. It’s a great honor to leave lasting memories of my subjects life.
