A Photographic Tribute to the People Who make Northwest Indiana Feel Like Home
Humans of Da’ Region
Humans of Da’ Region is an Ongoing Photography Project by Bella Photography That Celebrates the Everyday People of Northwest Indiana – at work, at play, at the table, and everywhere life happens. Inpired by the idea that powerful stories live in ordinary moments, this series documents the character, resilience, creativity, and warmth of the HUMANS who define Da’ Region.
What Is Da’ Region?
Da’ Region – or the Calumet Region is an unofficial but deeply felt Geographic area in the northwestern corner of Indiana. It is mostly associated with the counties of Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper and Newton.
Why We’re Doing This
As photographers, we believe imagery has the power to do more than sell products or promote brands – it can connect people, preserve culture, and spark pride.
This project exists to:
Celebrate the people who live, work, and build community here.
Document everyday life in an authentic, respectful way.
Showcase professional photography in real-world, unscripted environments.
Create a growing visual archive of the Calumet Region for future generations.
Drive curiosity and connection back to our local community.
Every photograph tells a small story. Together, they tell the story of Da’ Region.
We asked Brian, a resident of Chesterton for his view on living in Da’ Region. We were curious if his opinion might be different since he and his wife Andrea have only lived in the Region for the last 10 years. What he provided truely highlights some of the many wonderful things about our great Region that perhaps many of us ‘lifers’ take for granted. It’s a nice reminder of what Northwest Indiana has to offer.
Ten years ago, we traded the constant hum of life outside Ann Arbor for a quieter rhythm in Chesterton, and the choice has become part of who we are. What drew us here at first was simple and immediate: open sky, green space, and the steady hush of small‑town streets. Mornings now begin with birdsong and the distant lapping of Lake Michigan instead of traffic noise, and that difference—subtle at first—has reshaped our days.
We fell in love with the parks. Weekends that used to be scheduled down to the minute are now spent wandering trails, watching the light move through the trees, and finding new corners of the dunes to call our own. The beaches are a constant invitation: long walks on sand, wind that clears the head, and sunsets that make ordinary evenings feel like a small celebration. There is a calm here that feels intentional, as if the town itself breathes a little slower and asks you to do the same.
Chesterton’s small-town charm is more than architecture and ffestivals; it’s the way neighbors greet one another, the local shops that remember your name, and the friendly faces at the farmer’s market. People here are open in a way that makes community feel effortless. We traded the anonymity of a busy region for a place where people notice when you’re gone and welcome you back with a smile.
At the same time, we didn’t give up the city life entirely. Easy access to Chicago means we sill slip into museums, concerts, and restaurants when we want a night of big-city energy. That balance – quiet home life with the option of urban adventure – has been one of the greatest gifts of living here.
And then there’s the boating life at Marina Shores. Owning a boat changed our relationship with the lake: weekends become about navigation, shared chores, and the slow ritual of preparing for a day on the water. The marina community is another layer of friendship and belonging, where evenings end with the glow of lights on the water and conversations that stretch long into the twilight.
After a decade, Northwest Indiana feels less like a place we moved to and more like the place that made sense of everything we were looking for: nature, peace, community, and the freedom to choose between quiet and city. We came here for the parks and beaches, but we stayed for the way life here lets us breathe, connect, and savor the small, steady pleasures. – Brian, Chesterton Resident
Meet many more Humans of Da’ Region below. . .
Rick + Jodi – bella photography
Jodi told me I can’t hide behind the camera forever… apparently I’m a “Human of Da’ Region” too. For me, the Region is HOME. Born in Gary, raised in Merrillville – it’s in my blood. What makes this place special isn’t just where we live, it’s who we live with. The mix of cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives here doesn’t devide us – it makes us better. It introduces us to new ideas, new flavors, and new ways of seeing the world. I’ve been fortunate to serve this community in public office and through my business, and I don’t take that lightly. I’m proud – really proud – to play even a small part in what makes the Region such a great place to call home.
Deann – Chamber Leader
While I am not originally from Northwest Indiana, I quickly realized what community meant, standing together for issues that have impact. I have enjoyed watching our communities thrive and change over the years due to the passion and commitment from local leaders, business owners, neighbors, and families. I am so fortunate to lead Crossroads Chamber to have a front row seat to watch the success of our businesses. We are making moves in NWI that will lead to a better future for all. – Deann Patena
Meet. . . Vito?
Vito (is what we’ll call him) loves the Region because this is where his family and friends live. He also remembers some great paying jobs here although those have lessened over the years he said. Thanks for letting us capture your Region Face! There’s a lot of character in his portrait!

Growing up in Merrillville, and now owning a business in Valparaiso for the past 17 years. My favorite part of the region is the people and friends I’ve met. -Chris Barbauld
Local Leader Shauna – My Why?
I chose to move back to the “heart of the region” because growing up here as a teenager was great. I wanted my family to experience what community and neighborhood life was like. While our town (Merrillville) is not perfect, it has the potential to continue to be stronger and better than ever. I believe in the saying “Together we can.” So to summarize this question in a simple sentence, My Family is my Why!
Lisa Loves Our Diversity
Diversity and Community is why I love living in Northwest Indiana. Every city and town has so many things to offer not only in their community, but the surrounding communities as well. Hiking, biking, attending concerts, summer markets, and going to the beach are only a few of the things that make Northwest Indiana a great place to meet people.
Kosta Nuses – Merrillville Police Chief
“First and foremost, I love the Region because it’s home. There’s something about that sense of belonging that you just can’t duplicate. But what truly makes it special are the people who make us Da’ Region. We’re unique. We’re hardworking, intelligent, and gritty when we need to be. There’s a resilience here, a quiet toughness that defines who we are. We’re also cheerful and very proud of who we are. And then there’s the diversity. We’re a true melting pot, and that blend of cultures doesn’t just shape our community, it fills our tables. The result is a cuisine that’s rich, flavorful, and packed with character, just like the people who live here.
Serving Michael Griffin
From Mike: A Region that built steel, an alloy that blended iron and carbon to make a new, stronger, better metal. The people of Da’ Region, like steel, are an alloy. They are a blend of histories, many hues, many customs, many aspirations and they combine, taking the best qualities of each to make a new, durable better alloy. It is why the Region is strong. It is why it endures. Why I serve here – The late Frederick Buechner, was asked to define ministry. He said it is the place of the world’s greatest needs. While I don’t think of my work as meeting something world shaking, his words do inform my thinking. I serve here seeking the place my deepest joys, my skill sets, my interests, in service to meet my Region’s great needs. Hopefully, the place where my deepest joys and the Region’s great needs intersect, I can make the place a little better, a little stronger, a little more livable, a little more sustainable, a little more like home. – Micheal Griffin is the Town Manager of Merrillville. He served over three decades as Highland’s Clerk-Treasurer and a year as a State Senator.
