Walking for Hope: Supporting Sojourner Truth House

Jodi and I always look forward to capturing photographs for the annual Sojourner Truth House Fundraiser Walk, as we did this past Saturday. The event is one of the organization’s most successful fundraisers, raising more than $100,000 annually to support its ministry of hope and assistance for homeless and at-risk women and their children.

Sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, Sojourner Truth House provides hospitality, advocacy, integrative services, and collaborative support that help participants improve their quality of life in a safe, trusting environment.

The organization’s roots date back to 1997 when Sister Joan Fisher, PHJC, recognized the need for a center to serve women and children experiencing homelessness in Gary. That same year, Sister Peg Spindler, CSA, met with Sister Joan, and they discovered they shared the same vision: creating a safe and welcoming place where those in need could find support, hope, and encouragement.

Years ago, someone we knew who worked with the organization hired us to photograph the event. At first, we approached it like any other assignment. But afterward, we began asking questions about who they were, what they did, and how the photographs were being used.

The more we learned, the more inspired we became. Realizing that our imagery would help promote the organization’s important mission, we made the decision to donate our photography services. Since then, we’ve proudly provided our coverage pro bono.

It’s especially rewarding because we see so many familiar faces supporting a worthy cause, and we know our photographs are helping an organization that changes lives every day. The images aren’t being used to generate profit—they’re being used to create awareness, inspire support, and help those who need it most.

Each year brings its own unique moments, but the spirit remains the same. Hundreds of participants walk in solidarity to support this remarkable organization. People of all ages take part, including some who navigate the route with a cane, demonstrating the determination and community spirit that make the event so special.

We hope you enjoy these few images from the day, and we hope to see you next year!
